Content & Local Connections

Finnish radio offers a broad mix of music, entertainment, news and conversation. Stations serve different musical tastes and audiences, with formats ranging from contemporary hits and Finnish popular music to rock, classics and specialist programming.

Presenters and familiar programmes give stations a distinctive identity and create continuity in listeners’ daily lives. Local and regional broadcasters also connect audiences with the people, events and issues in their own communities.

Radio Advertising in Finland

Commercial radio offers advertisers both national reach and opportunities to connect with regional and local audiences. Different station formats allow campaigns to reach audiences with different interests and listening habits.

In 2025, radio advertising expenditure totalled €64 million, accounting for 5.1% of Finland’s media advertising market. Including digital radio advertising, the total reached €68.4 million.

Radio supports both long-term brand building and short-term sales activation. Advertisers can combine broadcast campaigns with digital audio and other media to support their wider marketing objectives.

Distribution & Digital Development

FM remains central to radio distribution in Finland, complemented by online listening and digital audio services. Audiences can listen through traditional receivers, websites, mobile apps and connected devices.

Broadcasters’ own platforms offer live radio, podcasts and on-demand programmes. Radioplayer brings Finnish radio stations together in a shared service, available through web browsers and apps for phones, televisions and cars.

Radioplayer in Finland is operated by Radiosoitin Suomi Oy, jointly owned by RadioMedia and Yle. Cooperation between commercial and public service broadcasters helps keep Finnish radio accessible as listening technologies evolve.

Audience Measurement

Radio audiences in Finland are measured through the National Radio Survey, known locally as Kansallinen Radiotutkimus or KRT. Conducted by Finnpanel, it provides the industry’s shared foundation for understanding reach, listening time and audience profiles.

The survey uses listening diaries and collects data throughout the year. Its base population is Finnish- and Swedish-speaking residents aged nine and over, excluding the Åland Islands.

Broadcasters use the findings to develop programming and monitor audiences, while advertisers and agencies use them to plan and evaluate radio campaigns. Results are also available in English through Finnpanel.

Commercial Radio Since 1985

Commercial radio broadcasting began in Finland in 1985, when the first local commercial stations went on air alongside Yle’s public service channels.

Since then, the industry has developed into a mix of national brands, regional networks and local stations. Digital services have expanded the ways audiences can access radio and related audio content, while live broadcasting remains at the heart of the medium.
